Guests were treated to cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and the
chance to visit with old friends as well as meet new ones.
At around 6:00 Mi. Joe Valentine welcomed the crowd that
had filled the grand ballroom at the Doral Tesoro Hotel. He
introduced his fellow hosts for this extraordinary event,
Mr. Bill Hudson and Mr. John Stockton, each of whom spoke
briefly to the sale guests. Mr. Valentine made several
acknowledgements and presentations before turning things
over to Mr. Hudson for the introduction and presentation of
a very special guest, a man that part of this night was
dedicated to honor, Col. Eddie Wood. Mr. Hudson spoke about
the fact that we should honor those to whom honor is due.
He spoke of a few of the many things that Col. Wood had
done for this great breed of cattle and the breeders who
raise them. He then called Dr. Zach Dameron and Charlie and
Doris Snyder, the driving forces behind the Col. Eddie and
Joyce Wood Scholarship Fund, forward to make a special
presentation to Col. Wood and his wife Joyce. Dr. Dameron
and Mr. Snyder both spoke about the legendary auctioneer's
many years of service and goodness that he and his wife
have shared with this industry before calling the Woods
forward for the presentation. The Woods made their way to
the front through the standing ovation of the entire room.
After the crowd quieted down Col. Wood was presented with
an original oil painting of the photo that had been used on
the cover of his sale catalogs for 40 annual sales. The
Woods thanked everyone for their generosity and then
announced that the scholarship, in their honor, would be
given to an Oklahoma University for a Rodeo Scholarship.
Mr. Hudson turned things over to Auctioneer, Bruce McCarty,
for the start of the fundraiser and art auction. The first
donated item, a Longhorn yearling heifer, originally
donated by Panther Creek Ranch was purchased and re-donated
by Rob Fenza, Bill Hudson and John Allen before being
purchased the last time by Larry Stewart. A total of
$23,500 was raised for the Col. Eddie and Joyce Wood
Scholarship Fund from the sale of this heifer. Other
donated items raised an additional $3850 to be added to the
Scholarship Fund, making the total over $41,300. At the
conclusion of the art auction, it was time for the Legacy
Sale II Sponsors Spotlight Heifer Sale. Before starting the
sale, Mr. Valentine took a moment to introduce and
recognize this year's sale sponsors, Bow Carpenter, H.C.
& Lynnda Carter, Wes & Carol Chancey, Rob Fenza,
Ben & Ann Graven, Butch & Kelly Geurin, Dave &
Sheila Hovingh, Ron & Barbara Marquess, Red &
Charline McCombs and Larry & Deborah Stewart. Now it
was time for the start of the heifer sale, with the fast
paced bidding at the Spotlight Heifer Sale, the Legacy
weekend was off to a blazing start. The top selling heifer
was JBM Miss Brooke at $22,000. She was consigned by Hudson
Longhorns and was purchased by Bow Carpenter. With a bid of
$20,000 Ben Gravett purchased the second high-selling
heifer, PC Cinnamon Spice. She was consigned by Panther
Creek Ranch. Lazy L Longhorns consigned the third
high-selling heifer, HL Diamond Dust, which sold for
$16,000. She was purchased by Panther Creek Ranch. When the
dust settled, the eleven elite heifers grossed $119,100 for
an average of $10,827. After the sale, from all the
accounts I was given, most partied until the wee morning
hours of the next day.
Attendees awoke the next day to overcast skies and the
threat of rain, which was almost as exciting as the sale
for the Texans who have been battling drought and
wildfires. With the main event hours away, some of those
attending the Friday evening events opted to sleep in,
others were up and out for a day of golf or shopping before
the rains set in. Then, as evening approached, everyone
began to gather around in the foyer in the hopes of one
last look at the cattle before the start of the sale but it
was not to be, the heavy rains were here to stay awhile.
Before the sale, guests were treated to cocktails at 5:00
pm followed by a three course meal of prime rib with all
the trimmings. As the crowd of Longhorn enthusiasts, from
all walks of life, dressed in their finest, finished their
five star meals they were welcomed by Sale Host, Joe
Valentine. Mr. Valentine introduced the other sale
sponsors, Mr. Bill Hudson and Mr. John Stockton, each of
whom briefly spoke to the crowd about the sale and their
love of the cattle. Mr. Hudson took a moment to recognize
and acknowledge all associations' officers, directors and
special guests. He also presented a few of these guests
with special awards. After the presentations, Mr. Hudson
turned things over to sale auctioneer, Bruce McCarty.
The first item to go on the auction block was a donated
lot, a heifer from Splash Of Color Longhorns with all the
proceeds to go to the Mosser Memorial Scholarship honoring
the late Philip Lee Mosser and Vicki Mosser, the son and
wife of TLBAA member Rex Mosser. The heifer was sold and
re-donated six times before selling the last time to
Bernice Moore. A total of $36,000 was raised from the sale
of the heifer. The money raised will help members of the
TLBT attend college. The Mosser Memorial Scholarship
committee awarded three $3,000 scholarships at the event.
There was a special lot offered by Mr. Bill Hudson, one of
his favorite trophy steers JS Legacy. Mr. Hudson donated
all the proceeds from the sale of the steer to the Butler
Longhorn Museum in League City, Texas. Mr. Rex Mosser
placed the winning bid on this beautiful steer and the
Butler Longhorn Museum received $20,000.
